Shamanism

Shamanism was practiced by the first healers and spiritual wisdom keepers in ancient indigenous cultures, the medicine men and women. The word “shaman” originates from the Tungus tribe in Siberia and means “one who sees in the dark”. Anthropologists have learned there exist core similarities in practices among these ancient cultures across the world. As all ancient spiritual practices are rooted in nature, shamanism is a means by which we human beings can strengthen our natural connection and live in harmony with ourselves, other people, animals, and our planet.

I was a skeptical scientist, always needing an explanation and tangible proof. But in my mid-life something shifted and I was nudged to open to new experiences. It was my exploration of becoming more mindfully present and quieting the busy mind, tuning into all of me, and sensing the life all around while outdoors that I had exquisite but unexplainable-by-logic experiences. I felt more alive and connected and knew I was not alone, that I am not just my body.

I become intrigued with learning more and in the course of research on different spiritual practices, discovered shamanic practices. I trained primarily in core shamanism, which teaches us to alter our consciousness through repetitive percussion such as drumming or rattling, and moves our brain into the theta wave state. We connect with the invisible realms and our helping spirits to receive guidance and healing for ourselves, other people, or the land. This is sacred work and we form a strong impeccable relationship with our helping spirits, guides, and power animals in order to bring forth their wisdom.

A shamanic session begins with your intention, a question or desire for healing some aspect of yourself. You rest comfortably while I journey on your behalf. I remain open to what arises, what spirit helpers appear, where they lead me, what they say and show me. A session may include: bringing back a power animal to empower you, soul retrieval to retrieve lost parts that fragmented during events that were overwhelming to your nervous system, extraction of misplaced energies that no longer serve, and divination for guidance to your questions.

Reiki

Reiki encourages your own physical and emotional healing by passing "universal energy" through the palms of the practitioner. Reiki was rediscovered in the late 19th century by Dr. Usui, while he was researching ancient texts to uncover the secrets of “hands on healing”.  Reiki is now widely used in setting such as hospitals, health care centers, assisted living communities, and spas, to work with anything from general feelings of not feeling good to work with serious diseases.

wellness practices

Wellness practices are creative practices that promote healing, wellness, coping and personal change. Traditional healing arts include music, art, dance/movement, poetry/writing, and drama therapies. These approaches combine artistic expression with psychological awareness and communication.

In addition to the traditional healing arts, there are many other forms of expression, connection and self-development that can play a key role in health. These can be practiced with the guidance of a coach or therapist, but can also be incorporated into your life on your own to gain enrichment, self-awareness, and pleasure. For example:

  • Mind-body therapies such as mindfulness, guided imagery, gentle movement (yoga, Qigong) can help us learn how to de-stress and control physiological functions such as blood pressure and heart rate.

  • Laughter and humor are good for our immune system and can shift our perspective and create connections with others.

  • Meditation and spirituality can bring us into a state of deep relaxation that can help us cope and feel connected with nature or a universal source of being.

  • Relating to pets can help us feel calmer and foster a feeling of closeness and understanding with another being.

  • Cooking or gardening can stimulate our senses, relax the mind and bring a deep sense of satisfaction.

  • Engaging in any creative process is healing. It is a way of knowing yourself better on the deepest levels, connecting with others (human or animal or nature), regulating your responses to stress and communicating your inner experience.

  • Even making small changes in our environment supports us on physical and emotional levels by bringing in natural light, art, color and pleasing sound—each having a profound effect on our nervous system and feelings of well-being.
